We had a patient who we cared for frequently as he came in for blood transfusions often. Laura developed a professional relationship with the patient and family because she was always caring, compassionate, and welcoming. When the patient started to decline in the ICU the wife came to our unit to seek out Laura to come visit him one last time. She was happy to oblige and it made a big difference to the patient and family. Sadly, the patient passed the next day. The ICU staff invited us over for the "Pause". The wife was happy again to see Laura and hugs and tears were exchanged. Laura made a big difference to the patient and family not only when he was alive, but in passing as well.
