After much advocating, planning, and collaboration with RT, Laura was able to take the patient to see her husband in his last few moments.
I was caring for a patient that was recently diagnosed with COVID one morning when she received news that her husband’s organs were failing and he would likely pass away that day in ICU. The patient was distraught. Not only was she battling COVID and in critical condition herself, but she was also attempting to process that her husband of thirty years would pass away. Laura was the IMU charge nurse during this shift, and she assured the patient she would do everything in her power to unite them for the last time. The team knew transferring the patient to her husband’s room on a different floor wouldn’t be easy and there would be some safety concerns. After much advocating, planning, and collaboration with RT, Laura was able to take the patient to see her husband in his last few moments. She took a lot of time to ensure the patient was safe while saying goodbye to the love of her life. Laura continued to exhibit exceptional care after returning to IMU by comforting the patient and being a support system since visitors were not allowed at this time.

Thanks to Laura this couple was able to be together to find peace and closure despite the darkness surrounding them. For the rest of the shift, the patient continued to express her gratitude for allowing her to hold her best friend's hand during his last breaths. Although these have been difficult times, Laura has been a light for everyone and will no doubt keep going above and beyond for our patients.
