Laura told her, “You are strong and you are never alone. I am here with you, find my voice and listen to my voice because I am here to keep you safe.”
We had a patient with a complex psychiatric and mental health history who came in for surgery and during recovery had severe hallucinations. Laura was a true nurse to the core. She ensured that she was not only clinically there for the patient, she held the patient’s hand through each and every hallucination.

When I was walking by the curtains, which of course were closed to decrease stimulation to the patient, I heard her talking the entire time to this individual; the patient was scared (visual hallucinations that were intense) and Laura told her, “You are strong and you are never alone. I am here with you, find my voice and listen to my voice because I am here to keep you safe.” It brought tears to my eyes because although this person will never remember due to her sedation and baseline mental health disorders, Laura was there the entire time. She ensured that this person was safe and showed her compassion. It was one of the most incredible moments to witness and is the definition of caring for your community like family. There was no stigma or judgment – just pure love in every interaction. This care did not go unnoticed, and I am proud to work alongside Laura.
