I nominate Laura Finseth Scott, one of the most extraordinary, compassionate, beautiful, intelligent and wonderful nurses to grace the Family Birthplace.
I'll never forget my first day at FBP, to say I was nervous would be an understatement!
A small, new city surrounded by bluffs and muddy water, with a wonderful work environment I would soon call my new home. Laura greeted me with her welcoming smile, warm giggle, and kind words as she gave me a tour as my first shift was starting and her long night shift was ending. Over the following years, I learned so much from Laura, she was my idol, the way she cared for her patients with such expertise, listened to their concerns, and always advocated for them so that they would receive the best care possible (and believe me ... the list goes on).
Not only did Laura have exceptional clinical skills, but she was involved in several committees on the floor, as she was so passionate to create a better workplace environment that strived on incorporating best evidence based practice, improving safety measures, and boosting staff morale. ALSO, she was a preceptor for several new nurses and nursing students, and I cannot think of a better person for this role because she was the epitome of the perfect nurse.
Everyone on the floor wanted to be more like Laura, a skilled nurse with the utmost dedication to her profession, who composed herself with such grace in all that she did. Laura not only provided exemplary care for her patients, but she was so committed to her co-workers. She was the nurse that emitted happiness and a kind heart, just by walking past. No matter the situation, emergency or not, she was there to lend a helping hand to anyone, at any time.
I am speaking for everyone from FBP and the thousands of lives you've touched when I say that you've made us better people, and FBP a better place. Although you are no longer physically here with us on a daily basis, not a day goes by where we don't miss you. We love you Laura Finseth Scott and are honored to wear your wings on our badge every time we come to work.
