Laura Fry, RN
I was cared for by Laura Fry during my stay for a line infection. I met her just a few hours after being officially admitted and moved to the floor, while I still had a terrible headache and generally felt awful, as well as being confined to the room on contact precautions while C. diff was ruled out. From the beginning, she approached with understanding while I literally hid my face in the darkened room with blinds drawn.
While the nurse I had on her off day (my second admission) was also very good, I was glad to have Laura back for the rest of my stay. Each morning at med pass, I'd throw some questions or concerns her way, and inevitably she had already asked the same ones before coming in. Dealing with infections, things aren't always cut and dry, so the answers weren't always available. But she was on top of everything as it came back.
After I was finally granted freedom, I wasn't walking the halls enough, so she took it upon herself to find a way to get me out. That day she worked extra hard to clear her schedule enough to actually take me outside of the hospital in the afternoon. I've never had that happen before. Not even when I spent over a month inside hospital walls.
Laura is the kind that I can tell was absolutely made for the job. She consistently adjusted her approach depending on how I was feeling each day. The times I did push the call bell, her response was quick, and my concerns were addressed, whether that was questions, Tylenol, or an IV that was becoming painful and needed removal. The times when I didn't need to push the call bell for a while, she would still stop by and make sure everything was good. Not just medically, but mentally, making sure I was cared for and listened to.
Her bedside manner and attention to detail allowed me to fully let my guard down, as I knew that she could handle anything that came up. Laura made sure that my second IV was replaced before it was time to run peripheral nutrition. Later, she would step in to assist the IV team with placing a PICC. Even when it came down to discharge, I was kept updated on the timeline for my ride, and I was fully prepared for release when the time came.
I wouldn't hesitate to have Laura care for my loved ones or me in the future and would consider it a blessing to have her making sure that everything is happening as it should, without my having to stay on top of every little thing.
