I watched her pour herself, physically and emotionally, into each moment.
Nursing is a career full of unexpected challenges, wonderful miracles, moments of joy, and heartbreaking sorrow. We are taught to navigate these with grace and dignity. We are taught to advocate and speak up. We are taught when to sit quietly and support. When I think of all of this, one nurse embodies everything nursing is and so much more.

Laura Long is a newer nurse in the IMCU/ICU unit. Recently, she was faced with a challenge, and she rose to it. Laura's patient had a sudden, unexpected change in condition. She recognized the change early and proceeded to act upon it. She first completed the protocol. And when it was clear the situation was not improving, she called a more senior nurse for advice and assistance without hesitation. She was willing to admit her inexperience for the best outcome for the patient. Unfortunately, as the situation progressed, a Rapid Response was initiated.

I watched as Laura spent hours that evening caring for her patient with compassion and concern. I watched as she carefully explained things to the patient and family. I watched her pour herself, physically and emotionally, into each moment. I watched her advocate for her patient to multiple providers with clarity and confidence rarely seen in new nurses. And in the end, I watched as she grieved with the patient and family as the realization came that nothing else could be done, and the patient decided to pass peacefully.

Laura is truly an incredible nurse. She cares deeply for her patients, their families, and her profession. She works diligently to better herself. She isn't scared to ask for help when she needs it, which can be the hardest thing for her to teach a new nurse. Laura truly deserves this award, and I am grateful to have her on our team.
