Laura Neveu, RN
On this day, Laura was taking care of a patient who was experiencing his last day of being alive. He wasn’t like some of our patients who are not conscious or unaware and unable to make the decision to withdraw life support. This patient was unfortunately fully aware, scared, and had few family members for support.
He made a comment that he wished his dog was there to see him transition. Laura immediately came to the charge nurse to see how they could make this happen. She facilitated this and made sure his dog was there when care was withdrawn. It was one of the most emotional moments I have seen in the ICU.
To know that Laura has only been a nurse for a short time makes that moment even more impactful. Her compassion and willingness to make a difference are the reasons many of us nurses come into this field. She is walking in her purpose, and her patients are blessed because of that.
