The mother of one of our patients with multiple, complex, specialty care needs called the office to ask a question about resources. Laura returned the call to mom and got some additional information from her and planned to meet with her at the patient's appointment the following week. When Laura met with mom, she quickly realized that the family had been disconnected from all resources when they moved from NH to Maine. In addition to the therapeutic resources this patient needed, the family struggled with insurance, language, and cultural barriers and other socioeconomic issues.
Laura got to the heart of the family needs and connected them to several places; including a PCP office, therapeutic programs for PT, OT, speech, nutrition, and GI which would all be covered by her insurance, as well as Foundation-sponsored programs which provide scholarships, such as Music and Art therapy and Hippotherapy. Laura created a binder for the mom so that she could have everything organized and in one place.
By the time the patient's next visit came around, mom was very excited to share all of their progress with Laura. She pulled out her new binder and proudly showed Laura what she had added and organized in the binder.
Laura stepped up in many ways for this family as an advocate, caregiver, and great listener. She thought ahead about the challenges and needs for both the patient and the family. Her time, effort, and concern regarding this family was a joy to witness. I believe Laura was as excited as mom to see that everything was coming together to the benefit of the patient. She was thrilled by mom's relief to have assistance and continues to support her appropriately.
Laura has worked in CHaD since our clinic opened at WDH in 2007. She has trained many nurses to uphold the same standard of care and compassion as is illustrated in this case. This is just one example of the many people Laura has guided to better health along their journey. She is thoughtful, a great listener, calm in every situation and above all, she truly cares about people. It is my honor to work with Laura.
