A patient's husband came to the front desk of the hospital and said he had a DAISY Award nomination and wanted to hand deliver it to Administration. He wanted to be sure it got into the right hands because he felt it was very important Laura Stone be recognized. The front desk called Administration and Michelle, the DAISY Committee Coordinator, happened to answer the phone. Michelle eagerly agreed to meet the gentleman to receive his verbal nomination.
The patient's husband was very passionate about Laura. He spoke of all the nurses he and his wife had encountered in the last 9 days during his wife's stay and repeatedly said how wonderful they were. But one stood out, Laura. The patient's husband also said they had previous stays at the hospital, again with wonderful service, but no one had ever matched the level Laura had. He said he had a hard time expressing on paper what an impression she had made on both he and his wife. The patient's husband is 84 years old and a retired teacher. He said all of the nurses were great about being attentive, giving information and responding to their needs. But somehow Laura made things feel different and personal. He said Laura's personality really came through and there was such passion in her. Her care seemed warm and like she was a personal friend of the family. He compared it to that teacher we all knew from school that all the kids loved and somehow connected with the kids differently than other teachers. They displayed a passion and you just felt they were in the profession they were meant to be in. He said that was nursing for Laura. She was meant to care for people.
