Laura, one of our lactation consultants - RNs, met with a mother and her young infant to help with breastfeeding. Laura noticed that the baby was having difficulty breathing. The baby had been to the doctor's office recently and was told it was normal stuffiness, but the mother remained concerned. Laura directed the mother to Urgent Care for further evaluation. The baby was found to be critically ill and transferred immediately to a Neo-Natal Critical Care Unit. (NICU). By focusing on meeting these baby's needs, listening to the baby's needs, listening to the mother, and collaborating with others on the healthcare team, the baby received the care needed. The baby's mother thanked Laura "for saving" her baby's life.
