There was a patient on Med Surg who passed away after a short illness. His wife and several children were by his side. As other family members were notified of his passing and making their way to Virginia, the family decided that they wanted to come back later that evening to view the body again and say their goodbyes. Around 7pm, the family arrived. Laura was not the primary nurse, but was aware of the circumstances. Laura came to the Nursing Supervisors office and asked if she could help prepare the body for the family to view. With Laura's background of being a hospice nurse, this assistance was greatly appreciated. Laura made sure that the chairs were arranged in the room, the lighting was appropriate and the patient was presentable. Laura also volunteered to stay past her shift to be with this family during this time. This was going above and beyond and truly exemplifies Riverside's mission statement of "caring for others as we would care for those we love". Laura exhibited compassion and care to this family in a time that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. This story was a perfect example of Jean Watson's Caritas Processes 1 and 2, practicing loving kindness to others as well as being authentically present.
