I have witnessed such an exhibition of teamwork and strength from Laura that can only be drawn from an impeccable character and her innate nursing professionalism.
Children’s is bursting with excellent nurses, but it is often through trials that the strongest and most exemplary nurses begin to stand out in the crowd. This is what I have witnessed these past few months in Laura Yavanian. Laura has always lived and breathed the mission and values that Children’s sets forth for pediatric nursing care. Her communication with patients and families is excellent, and her breadth of knowledge and experience as a nurse shows through in every task. This is the norm for Laura. However, amongst a nearly breakable amount of change, stress, and increased workload over the past months, I have seen her rise up to meet each challenge consistently and exponentially. Amid short staffing, Physician and staffing changes, challenging phone calls, heated parents, complex insurance company communications, and participation in numerous ongoing projects and policy changes that have all come to fruition nearly simultaneously, I have witnessed such an exhibition of teamwork and strength from her that can only be drawn from an impeccable character and her innate nursing professionalism. It is the unseen trenches of staff nursing that most often go unnoticed - the work that will never be a media moment or on the cover of some glossy newsletter. As I have worked through these trialing times with Laura, she has amazed me time and time again with her passion, her resilience, her dedication, her kindness, and the straight up suffering that she has endured on behalf of excellent patient care. Above and beyond does not even begin to describe the level of nursing care that Laura provides to our patients and families, or to the contributions she has made on behalf of her coworkers and Children’s as a whole.
