Laurel Sopher was nominated by a 74-year-old patient who was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She had just had five weeks of external radiation when she met Laurel for the first time for her three internal radiation treatments.
The patient states, "what a joy to meet her! From the very first meeting--big smile and sparkling eyes. She took my hand and introduced herself with all the warmth that a family member would give. She radiated the "five C's" (compassion, competence, confidence, conscience, and commitment)."
The patient goes on to write that they found common ground since she lived in Cranbrook, B.C. and Laurel's son used to play hockey there. She found herself start to relax right away. Laurel was able to explain step-by-step what she was going to go through, and even asked about her music preference for Country & Western. The next day, Laurel forgot to bring her Alan Jackson CD; the patient stated, "this wonderful lady was going to bring a CD from home! Through her, I was able to find the confidence and strength required to get through the most difficult thing I have ever had to do".
"Laurel portrayed extreme confidence with a wonderful team effort. She is definitely committed to her work and makes me so relaxed...or as relaxed as possible during these treatments. Laurel is a true angel! I feel so blessed to have had her guide me through this procedure. I do hope that you award her the DAISY Award that she so richly deserves!"
