Any question I asked, she made me feel validated and answered it.
On a Saturday, we rushed our daughter to the ER in Tooele, Utah. She was not able to breathe. Once we got there, they said she has croup. The ER doctors administered epinephrine three times, trying to get her airways to open, with no luck. They talk about sedation and intubation but first called PCH to see what the best course of action was. The doctor on staff said he was sending a LifeFlight to get her to PCH. The steroids finally kicked in and K was doing much better. They transferred us to the 3rd floor where we would be staying until we were out of the woods. K fell asleep and slept all night. Next morning we woke up and Lauren was our new nurse. She was so kind and helpful. She was able to help us understand the medication. Any question I asked, she made me feel validated and answered it. I was nervous to go home that day, I did not want to have to repeat what happened the day before. She told me that was valid and that I could bring it up with the doctors when they come by. She made me feel I was in control of my daughter’s medical treatment. Once the resident and other doctors came in, they told us that they wanted to keep us until the morning. The supervisor said she would normally send us home with some steroids but I wanted to make sure we stayed until at least to see what happens after the steroids wear off. The supervisor said it was a good compromise. At around 3, we noticed a little stridor, but nothing bad. When Lauren came around 4, she could tell she was declining. She said she was trying too hard to breathe and called to see if we could get more steroids or epinephrine. Luckily, she was vigilant enough to ask the resident for what she thought my daughter needed. And the doctor was humbled enough to listen and trust her judgment. At around 3 when we heard she was sounding worse, we decided we could get them to let us stay till the next morning. We told Lauren and she made us feel like we know the best. I have been impressed by all the staff here at PCH. The respect that each of the nurses have for doctors and all the staff has for the parent. It is amazing. The way things were handled by Lauren, I believe have saved my daughter’s life or at least lots of pain and trauma. If Lauren would not have spoken up and asked for what she felt was needed, last night could have been much worse. I will be forever grateful for all of the doctors and nurses at PCH but most of all for Lauren. If anyone is deserving the highest praise is her. If I had more paper, I could keep going in my satisfaction with our stay. Thank you so much. We love PCH!
