I personally had the recent honor of meeting a Veteran's wife while in a local nail salon. As we sat there, she began to share a story with me about how her husband was severely ill from cancer and, coincidentally, was a patient at our Charleston VAMC at the time that we were talking. This admission was his fourth admission to the Charleston VAMC since November 2014. She continued to talk of how her husband had been chronically ill for many years and that he had been hospitalized numerous times in many hospitals throughout the nation (as they moved frequently while in the military) over the course of the past 15-20 years. As she continued to talk about her husband and the struggles they had experienced with his health, she told me about "this wonderful nurse" who was currently taking care of him at the VA and about how "genuine, sweet, and caring" she was. She said that this nurse was "the best nurse that had EVER taken care of her husband." In fact, she became tearful when talking about just how wonderful this nurse was to her husband and to her. After she told her story, I shared with her that I, too, was a nurse at the VA and asked if she minded telling me who this nurse was. Her answer - Lauren Bridgers.
