December 2025 Honoree
Lauren Burke, BSN
Lauren Burke demonstrated extraordinary courage, skill, and compassion—truly embodying the essence of a nursing hero.
After completing a partial shift in the Emergency Department, she was driving home when she heard nearby gunshots. Without hesitation, Lauren immediately turned back to EUH ED.
Pulling into the ambulance bay, she jumped straight into action as the officer was rushed in with life-threatening injuries.
From the moment the patient arrived, Lauren’s clinical expertise and calm leadership were critical. She rapidly assessed the patient’s condition while coordinating with the ED and surgical teams.
Recognizing the need for immediate vascular access, she helped place large-bore peripheral IVs and central venous catheters, setting up rapid infusers, and pressure bags to ensure rapid blood and fluid administration.
She monitored vital signs continuously with cardiac monitors, assisted with mechanical ventilation setup, and prepared intubation kits for airway management.
Lauren anticipated every step of critical care. She ensured suction devices were available to maintain airway clearance, prepared arterial lines for continuous blood pressure monitoring, and coordinated with the team to manage massive transfusion protocols efficiently.
Understanding the high acuity of the situation, she recruited her fellow CVICU nurses, helping assign roles for monitoring infusion devices, managing medications, and gathering additional critical care supplies.
Throughout the crisis, Lauren maintained a calm and focused presence, providing guidance to the team, communicating clearly with physicians, and prioritizing interventions for the sickest patients first.
She facilitated rapid, safe, and coordinated care that directly impacted patient outcomes while keeping staff organized under intense pressure.
Her ability to act decisively and lead the team exemplifies the highest standards of critical care nursing.
Lauren Burke’s heroism that day went beyond clinical skill—she demonstrated courage, empathy, and selflessness in the face of extreme circumstances.
Her actions not only saved lives but also inspired her colleagues and exemplify the core values celebrated by the DAISY Award: clinical excellence, compassionate care, and unwavering dedication to patients and colleagues alike.
Thank you, Lauren, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
