My nurses could see my discomfort and decided to work to advocate on my behalf to the doctor.
I gave birth to a baby boy in March. I was told I was having a girl, so I was very surprised to find out I was having a boy. I had great nurses, full of compassion, empathy and teamwork. My nurses worked together to help manage my pain. The doctor ordered Motrin 800mg q6 hrs. My pain was intense from this being my third vaginal birth because I was receiving Oxytocin to help my uterus contract. I was also breastfeeding which contracts your uterus. So after a restless night, my pain was still intense and because I’m a nurse myself, I didn’t want to bother the nurses or the doctors with my whining, I know they must be very busy at this time. My nurses could see my discomfort and decided to work to advocate on my behalf to the doctor. I was about to receive hydrocodone (praise God) so I was able to walk around and finally shower. My pain was under control. Also, my compassionate and empathetic nurse Lauren was able to find some baby boy clothes for my son, so I didn’t have to bring him home in a pink tutu. Thank you, Sentara Nursing staff.
