On so many occasions, Lauren Fielden helps families and patients of all ages. As an Emergency Department nurse, we are expected to take care of patients aged 0-21 years old, volunteers, families, and even co-workers. We have to know what to do if an employee walks in with chest pain or a father has a syncopal episode during an IV start. There is no patient, family, visitor, or employee that we will ever turn away!
Recently, a Security Officer was eating lunch in the break room when Lauren took a 30 second break to run to the restroom. After walking out of the restroom, she looked over at the officer and noticed that he was not breathing, unable to talk, and grabbing his throat. She quickly recognized that he was choking and immediately began the Heimlich maneuver. Luckily, because of her expertise in BLS, the food was dislodged very quickly and the officer was able to breathe again. Lauren then went on about her day, taking care of her other patients without another word. Lauren is a true DAISY Nurse for her ability to attend to the officer in a quick and efficient manner that ultimately saved his life.
