Lauren has been a colleague and co-worker of mine for several years now and has earned an excellent reputation for providing compassionate nursing care and for being a team player. She is always willing to help a co-worker in need whether or not she is busy herself. I have had multiple occasions where I could not have gotten through the shift without her help.
Recently, I had a difficult patient that occupied the majority of my shift. This patient was combative, aggressive, agitated, confused, uncooperative, and difficult to provide care for. He was hostile towards hospital staff and was non-compliant with the doctor’s orders. This patient was a drug addict outside of the hospital and was extremely tolerant to any medications that were provided to him. Multiple code whites had already been activated on this patient on previous shifts. The majority of my attention had to be centered on him. In doing so, I was unable to provide quality care and attention to my other patient assignments.
At that instance, Lauren saw I was struggling with my patient and volunteered to dispense my other patients’ medications. Lauren, at the time, had her own patient assignments, but was still very willing to help. With Lauren, I was able to diffuse the situation with my patient while she took care of my other assignments for the time being. In that period of time, Laura dispensed medications, provided pain medications, ambulated my patients, put them back into bed, and assisted with multiple ADL’s for all of them.
Once my combative patient was calm and his issues were resolved I was able to check on my other assignments. My other patients were comfortable, catered to, and had tolerable pain scores. When I asked these patients about Lauren, they all had nothing but positive feedback. Lauren was very attentive, caring, and went the extra mile for my patients as well as her own.
This is only one of the many occurrences where Lauren has been a great help to me. I am certain that she has helped many of the other staff members in their times of need. She is an essential team player to Meade 1. No one ever has anything negative to say about her for she is an excellent nurse. Lauren Hafner is very deserving of the DAISY award.
