I am writing this not just as a fellow MWH nurse, but as the mother of my son who was under Lauren's care. My son was in the beginning stages of a very nasty RSV strain, and he was struggling so hard to breathe. Nurse Lauren and the entire healthcare team went above and beyond for my 7 month-old baby boy that day, and it was determined that he needed to be airlifted to VCU PICU. I was going to ride the helicopter with my son, but nurse Lauren had to break the news to me that the original helicopter coming had to be rerouted and that a different crew was coming. There would be no room for me with this crew. To say I ugly cried afterward is an understatement. Nurse Lauren was a Godsend. To us as she comforted not only me but also my husband and even my parents during this time. She calmly explained to us what was about to happen with my son, calmed me down again when I saw the MSET nurse hanging by my room, and calmed me down yet again when her fellow nurse offered me a chance to talk to the chaplain. By the time the helicopter crew came to get my son, I was ready. I knew he was going to be in great hands. I mean, if Nurse Lauren and my son's healthcare team (who again were all above and beyond) were telling me this crew would take excellent care of my baby, then I knew I had nothing to worry about. My son ended up staying in VCU's PICU for 65 days, and Christmas came early when he started to get better and he was released. I cannot thank Lauren enough for what she did for my son, myself, and my family. I hope to be as good of a nurse to my patients as she was to us.
