When the IV was removed I bled profusely. Lauren, with calm urgency, got the bleed stopped and bandaged my hand.
Lauren was my day shift nurse for my last two days at Soin. Having had outstanding nurses (both night and day) up until then I was anticipating an efficient but personable nurse, but when I got was so much more. She took the time out of her busy schedule to get to know me and my family on a personal level. During the course of my stay, my IV blew the vein; it was so bad to be redone. During her shift that vein blew as well and a third IV was put in. Within hours that vein blew as well.
When the IV was removed I bled profusely. Lauren, with calm urgency, got the bleed stopped and bandaged my hand. The hand welled and she immediately got it further wrapped in an ice pack. Next, she tried to get a PICC nurse to do another IV. When it was made clear none were available, she consulted with the attending physician and it was determined that I was to be released early the next day and they agreed with her that another IV was unnecessary and I could receive my needed antibiotics in pill form. By then the night nurse, A, was coming on. Together they made me feel as if I was the only patient they had. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the entire staff was.
The next morning Lauren was back and did everything she possibly could to help me get a Sunshine discharge by 11 am. Even though it ultimately didn’t happen (paperwork snafu) I am confident she did her best. When she finally wheeled me down for my husband to take me home, there were big hugs, sincere thank yous, and I’ll miss you.
