Lauren stayed in the room the whole time, pulled a chair to the bedside, sat down, and held her patient's hand.
Her patient was dying of COVID, (proned, paralyzed, and on pressors) and had no living children or immediate family in the area. When it came time for compassionate extubation per the wishes of the patient's mother in Puerto Rico, a granddaughter from Puerto Rico showed up without notice in the unit prior to starting the process and was understandably upset by the plan. Following extubation, the granddaughter sat outside of the glass door. Lauren stayed in the room the whole time, pulled a chair to the bedside, sat down and held her patient's hand, watched like a hawk for symptoms, and addressed them quickly with bolus doses until she died peacefully. It was a huge chunk of her day. Maybe it is what she regularly does, but at the moment it seemed above and beyond the call to me.
