Lauri's plate was already full, due to the hour of the day and needing to work with the shift change, but she was also very much wanting to make sure I went home with all the information I needed to take care of myself once I got home.
Lauri was my RN on the last day of my hospital stay for abdominal surgery. She was so kind and caring and really attentive to making sure I was comfortable during the day. She was thorough and had such a great attitude about her work that you just felt she loved doing what she did.
My doctor had paid me a visit earlier in the day but wanted a second visit later in the day before making a determination for me to go home. He cleared me to go home late in the day and it was getting close to a shift change. Lauri's plate was already full, due to the hour of the day and needing to work with the shift change, but she was also very much wanting to make sure I went home with all the information I needed to take care of myself once I got home. She had already shown my husband and me earlier how to manage the drain and document the results. Now, at the end of her shift when she should have been going home, she spent extra time to change the bandages covering the staples from surgery so she could show my husband and me how to remove and replace the bandages. She knew we still had medication to pick up at Walgreens in Charles Town, WV before it closed and it was already close to 8 pm. She helped me get dressed, sent my husband for the car, called for hospital transport for getting me to the car, and then called the pharmacy to let them know we were on our way.
Being a caring person is not something you can be taught; it is something you choose to do. She was amazing and I really appreciated all that she did that evening.
