Like J. Patrick Barnes, whose family created the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, my friend E was recently admitted to 3West Oncology with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP). ITP is an autoimmune disorder that affects the blood's ability to clot normally. As nurses, we both know enough about blood dyscrasias to appreciate the seriousness of the disorder but not enough about its treatments and plan of care to calm our fears.
Initially, E was admitted to the 5th floor but her admission was quickly rerouted when the nurse manager of 3West learned of the diagnosis. Best thing ever!
After settling E in, I went home to get a few things and was back with plans to stay the night. I expected to sleep in the recliner, but Laurie had better plans; she had a chair-bed brought in for me and wouldn't even let me make my own bed. She and the PCT did all of the setting up. I felt awkward letting them do that for me as I work there. Laurie was polite and quick in replying that I work in the ICU and not on 3West. She treated me like E's family. Whenever she checked on E, she checked on me.
Laurie took so much time to explain ITP and its various treatments to us. She answered questions repeatedly as we kept asking nearly the same questions over and over (fear makes you do that). She was patient, kind and so reassuring.
As a seasoned nurse, I recognize patient care that goes above and beyond expectations. Laurie personifies all the characteristics that The DAISY Award stands for: commitment to patient care, kindness with humor to patients and families, integrity and maintaining patient dignity and their rights, and vast knowledge of the illnesses her patients are being treated for.
She really put us at ease that first night and made sure that E got the best sleep possible given the circumstances. And as if all this was not enough, she brought a mini fridge to the room to store E's food and drinks.
Over the near week that E was on 3West, I got to witness the other side of nursing with awe and respect. All of the caregivers were amazing and deserve our recognition and gratitude.
Laurie Botti was the nurse who set the stage for the week and I'll be forever in her debt to her for taking such great care of my friend!! She is without a doubt an Extraordinary Nurse like those nurses who took care of J. Patrick Barnes and his family.
