Laurie is a fabulous nurse and there are too many examples to try to write them all down! One example is as follows:
During a pre-procedure phone call in preparation for an upcoming MRI, Laurie patiently and tirelessly worked through a particularly difficult patient's allergies and medication. The patient had a very extensive and complicated list. It was clear from listening to Laurie patiently and compassionately try to get the accurate information that the patient was confused and getting frustrated at not being able to provide the information that was needed.
Laurie was able to calmly talk the patient through the information and also schedule a follow-up phone call with the patient's husband to finish getting the missing information needed.
After hanging up, Laurie continued researching the procedure further and was able to discover that the patient had a failed attempt for the same procedure the week before and ultimately discover that trying to repeat the procedure with procedural sedation would not be sufficient and would undoubtedly fail again, only this time with an IV sedation.
Laurie spoke to our MRI Radiologist for the day about what she had found and also called the patients ordering MD and discussed her findings with their office. Ultimately after herding cats for a significant period of time, it was decided that the procedure would be canceled. Thus through Laurie's diligent efforts, compassion, and attention to detail, she was able to save a very sickly patient from traveling in for a visit to the hospital for a procedure that was set up for failure from the beginning and preventing the patient from unnecessarily receiving Procedural Sedation medication.
Laurie is an asset and a blessing to the hospital, a joy to work with! This is only one of the countless examples.
