Laurie Fegley, MSN, RN
Laurie exemplifies what ICARE stands for in every aspect. She leads a group of nurses across several services and fosters an environment of clear, frequent communication, respect, and compassion while encouraging professional development in a supportive environment.
Laurie has tirelessly strived to keep her staff “in the loop” with the continuously changing healthcare/workplace environment- sending updates on TEAMS chats daily and performing rounds in each area, or more if warranted. She also holds staff meetings regularly with important updates for the facility and our direct work group. She has an open-door policy and keeps herself readily available to staff via TEAMS, email, and/or cell phone if she is out of office for any reason.
Laurie encourages and empowers her staff to seek professional development opportunities, as well as to be more involved in the everyday process improvement initiatives in our department and throughout the facility. Her efforts help in leading the way to overall better patient care and increased staff satisfaction. She does everything she can to ensure staff have adequate time to attend meetings and work on various projects they are involved in, as well as required TMS/educational training that is either required or desired on an individual basis.
Not only does she encourage staff to take part in these things, but she also makes herself readily available to bounce ideas off and help work through problems as we run across them. She has even stepped in to cover patient care while allowing staff time to accomplish their goals/additional duties.
Her mind is a huge asset to not only our department, but the entire facility, as she has shown her critical thinking and problem-solving skills to be top-notch, contributing to several efforts throughout the facility to improve Veteran-centered care and outcomes. Laurie holds herself to the same standards that she holds her staff, fostering an environment of trust and mutual respect.
She never asks staff to complete tasks that she, herself, would not do and always makes herself available to assist if needed. She is an ethical role model for every person throughout the facility, as she holds herself accountable in everything she does, shows respect for every person she encounters, and offers the same amount of opportunities for everyone. She always remains transparent and truthful in her actions, intentions, and communication (to say the least).
Laurie has been an invaluable part of the 1S team for her amazing leadership in the workplace, but she also shows immense compassion for her employees. She goes above and beyond to check on her employees when she can see that something may be weighing heavily on their shoulders but never pries beyond what the employees feel comfortable sharing. She can see and empathize with everyone’s individual situations and understands that, while the home life is home and the work life is here, we are still all people with real lives and real emotions that can’t always just get “dropped at the door."
Overall, Laurie is the gold standard model of the ICARE values and deserves to be recognized for her amazing leadership.
