We recently had a tragedy in Virginia Beach, where an active shooter went to the city municipal building and killed 12 innocent people.
A man was admitted to the hospital later that week with an unrelated illness. Laurie was assigned to the patient for potential integrated care needs. During her conversation, she learned the patient had retired the day before the shooting and was at the municipal center completing paperwork when the shooting occurred. He knew most of the victims.
Sentara Princess Anne Hospital chaplain services were going to have a ceremony later that week in the chapel to remember the fallen and to acknowledge the collective loss of our community. Laurie worked with the clinical team to get the patient in a healthy enough state to which he could attend the ceremony.
The patient and family were grateful for the opportunity to participate.
