When he was readmitted to LAH, she once again stepped in to ensure his needs were met and that he remained with his cat.
Laurie is being recognized not only for her exceptional daily work but for the extraordinary compassion and dedication she consistently demonstrates in caring for her patients. One powerful example of Laurie’s impact was her work with a long-stay patient, G, who was facing a rapid decline due to ALS. G was understandably angry and in deep denial about his prognosis.

Laurie met him where he was emotionally, building a relationship rooted in empathy and trust. Through this connection, she was able to help him secure a Power of Attorney and begin planning for discharge, an incredibly difficult step for someone in his situation. Laurie’s compassion shone through when she discovered that G’s greatest concern was being with his beloved cat.

Knowing he couldn’t return to his apartment, Laurie worked tirelessly to find a discharge location that could accommodate both his medical needs and his cat. She also discovered that G could communicate by texting with his nose and began emailing him regularly. This gave G a voice, a sense of control, and a way to express his frustrations and participate in his care.

During a particularly intense ICU stay, Laurie visited G daily. The gratitude in his eyes said it all; he knew she was there for him. Her ability to bring humor and lightness into their interactions helped ease his emotional burden and deepened their bond. Even after discharge, Laurie continued to advocate for G, visiting him and supporting the staff at his new facility. When he was readmitted to LAH, she once again stepped in to ensure his needs were met and that he remained with his cat.

Laurie’s commitment didn’t end there; she attended G’s funeral, a small but deeply meaningful service, and shared stories of their connection. Her presence made the service special and honored G’s life in a profound way. Laurie also participated in post-discharge whole-person care rounds, sharing her experience to help others navigate similar challenges. Laurie’s dedication, empathy, and advocacy make her a shining example of nursing excellence and a truly deserving DAISY Award nominee.
