Laurie took this patient with her all over the unit for her whole shift. She gave the patient tasks to do that kept her occupied and stayed with the patient the whole time.
Laurie demonstrates and models extraordinary behavior in compassionate nursing care. I remember a time where we had an extremely confused and ambulatory elderly patient. This patient posed a risk to themselves because of possibly falling. The 7W team was still growing, and we were working on increasing our staffing. The patient also needed to remain restraint and sitter-free which made the situation a little bit more complicated. However, this did not stumble Laurie. Laurie took this patient with her all over the unit for her whole shift. She gave the patient tasks to do that kept her occupied and stayed with the patient the whole time. Laurie was there each day. The patient became our “7W grandma”. Laurie’s care of this patient was twofold; 1, the patient’s emotional needs were met by keeping her busy and fulfilled. We know that in caring for our confused patients a lot of the time they don’t want to lay in a bed all day, they want to keep their minds active; Laurie did just that. She also kept the patient safe from falling which would have been tragic. 2, Laurie demonstrated exceptional nursing care. Laurie gave of herself, sacrificed her time and helped out her team. That is a true leader. She gave us something to aspire to, showed patience and empathy. I continue to reflect on what Laurie did during that time and I am so grateful that I got to witness such compassionate care in nursing.
