Laurie Westbury, RN, BSN, RNFA, CNOR is the DIASY AWARD recipient for August 2010 at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital
Laury is the Clinical Educator of Surgical Services . Laury’s nomination was submitted by Janice Jezuit, Executive Director of Perioperative Services who wrote, “We are proud to nominate her and blessed to have her on our team at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital”.
The nomination also read as follows…
Laury is the ‘heart and soul’ of the OR. She has been the ‘heart’ of the open heart team since the inception of the program in 1988. She is the ‘soul’ of the main OR in her dual role as the clinical educator. In both roles she is an effective teacher, a respected leader and an astute clinician. She is a mentor to the novice and the expert nurse, the surgical technician – and even the medical student! The OR staff is witness to the passion and compassion she holds for them, the patients and the profession as a whole.
Laury is a nurse first and foremost for the patient, but never loses sight of the family. Her kind words and manner put them at ease during a very anxious time. It is her style to hug, to hold hands – to even shed a few tears with them. She knows the power of touch and the effect of empathy.
Laury has worked at Hinsdale Hospital since January 1988. During this time she has become certified in operating room nursing, has completed the program to serve as a registered nurse first assistant; has earned her BSN and most recently has become certified as a clinical educator. She shares her enthusiasm for learning every day with the staff and the students. When bringing evidence-based practice to life, Laury uses humor and draws upon real-life experiences to help transition theory into action.
Laury is appreciated and respected by all her colleagues on the open heart team and in the main OR including Dr. Frank Lutrin.
Laury is a well-deserved recipient of the Daisy Award.
