He made my family feel comfortable, safe, and heard.
My grandfather had open heart surgery. With him being an 84-year-old man at the time, it was an anxiety-provoking journey for my family. The idea of leaving him at the hospital alone overnight was heartbreaking. Then we met Lazaro. Lazaro not only joked around with my grandfather and made sure that he was comfortable, but he also took care of my grandma to ensure her anxiety was at ease. He made my family feel comfortable, safe, and heard. At the time of my grandfather's surgery, I was also a nursing student, which led me to be very fascinated with all of the different devices the CVICU had been using to care for my grandfather. Lazaro took the time to answer all of my questions as an eager nursing student and family member.

My grandfather does not remember anything from his open heart surgery. However, the one thing my grandfather does remember is Lazaro and the care he gave him. To this day, my grandparents talk about how appreciative they are to have been cared for by Lazaro. Lazaro fits the true definition of a nurse. We are so unbelievably thankful for his care.

In the middle of November 2024, I had the opportunity to float to CVICU from MSICU. Not being very familiar with the unit and how things run from a nursing perspective, I was a bit nervous. Lazaro happened to be working that day, and took time to help me become better acclimated to the unit. Lazaro assisted me in caring for my patients when needed. He continued to ask if I needed anything or had any questions. Lazaro was sure to explain in detail everything he was educating me on. I am honored to have been able to work with Lazaro.
