Recently Leah Duffy took care of a pediatric trauma patient that had lost his mother in the accident. Leah was in the process of giving very labor intensive emergency trauma care, including giving blood, checking a tourniquet, and working with the team on multiple IV attempts. During the entire time of patient care Leah took that extra few seconds to explain what she was doing to her patient. Her patient was a 6 year old with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Leah ensured that the patient was told each thing that was happening and made sure she kept the room calm for the child. Leah went above and beyond caring for the patient as well as her fellow staff members and the child's teachers. When the teacher arrived to identify the child, Leah took time to explain to her what was going on, got her a chair, and then continued to explain what was happening. Leah took the extra time to get the teacher water and tissue and really gave exceptional care in a very hard situation. In the days after the event Leah took the time to text her fellow coworkers to check in on them and their self care. Leah is a strong nurse that pays attention to whole person care with an emphasis on whole community care.
