My patient (and Leah's) had been in isolation/quarantine for over a month. The patient was having a hard time with the confinement, being away from family, friends, and a sponsor. Without giving too much detail, the patient was struggling with his situation. Leah had developed a strong relationship with the patient. She worked hard to get the patient a medication for underlying depression. She also brought the patient a journal, with the serenity prayer inscribed on the first page for the patient to write about what feelings and where the patient wants to go in life (honing in on the opportunity to reinforce sobriety and better life choices). She printed out the chapters of the AA Handbook for the patient to review and reflect upon while in confinement and brought a stuffed animal for "touch and comfort". She gave me tips on how to better communicate with the patient, to use gentle touch and really listen to him; work to give him more control over his environment.
Leah went above and beyond to make a long-lasting difference in this patient's life and not just the immediate care. The patient truly appreciated what she did.
Leah is a true gift to patients, colleagues, and Seton. I am so moved and impressed by her every day we work together.
Note: This is Leah's 2nd DAISY Award!
