He was very professional with his responsibilities to my dad and our family. He answered questions we had as well. He took the time to show us that dad was his #1 concern.
My father F was in and out of hospitals for 8 weeks due to complications after his double bypass surgery. During those 8 weeks, pre-operation stay in ICU with a balloon pump in 1 hospital. Surgery for double bypass in a 2nd hospital. Inpatient rehab readmittance to a hospital for a urinary tract infection after removal of catheter, transitional care facility, taken by ambulance to a 3rd hospital with heart attack symptoms and readmitted to Mission Regional Medical Center.
After spending 45 nights in hospitals before he was readmitted for his last 3 nights, F never mentioned or made a connection with any nurse. His spirits were very down when he was told he had to be readmitted for a cardio catheterization procedure because one of his bypass grafts was 100% blocked. F’s ICU nurse, Leandro, made a connection with F and his spirits turned around 100%. Leandro took time for F like no other nurse in the previous 45 nights. He patiently explained all that was going on and took the time to bond with my dad. He was very professional with his responsibilities to my dad and our family. He answered questions we had as well. My dad was always questioning the pills the nurses were giving him. Leandro was the first nurse after 45 nights in different hospitals and units who explained what each pill was for. When dad didn’t like his last dinner served on his 48th night in the hospital, Leandro brought him 2 different sandwiches he could pick from. Leandro could sense it was too hard for dad to eat since he had orders to lay flat for 4-6 hours. The sandwich option was the perfect alternative to get dad to eat supper. Leandro took the time to explain to dad the importance of lying flat as the doctor ordered. My dad can be stubborn, but he explained it in a firm, but caring way and got through to my dad the importance of it.
I’ve never seen a nurse connect with my dad as Leandro did. It took his last 3 nights of a 48-night journey in different hospitals and facilities for this to happen. Leandro stayed 1 hour after his shift to be the nurse to get dad transitioned from his ICU room to a regular room. Then he assisted my mom and me out of the hospital because the front doors were locked. As you can see there is not enough space to indicate how deserving Leandro is of this award.
Note: This is Leandro's 2nd DAISY Award!
