Because of Leann's excellent care in reading O's chart, she discovered a carotid ultrasound had not been performed PRIOR TO his open heart quadruple bypass surgery, which was to be scheduled for Friday.
O was admitted to TMH, having a heart attack. What we thought would be a few days turned into 23 days. Because of Leann's excellent care in reading O's chart, she discovered a carotid ultrasound had not been performed PRIOR TO his open heart quadruple bypass surgery, which was to be scheduled for Friday. The ultrasound could not be performed because there was no one to administer it over the weekend. On Monday, O was prepped and ready for open heart surgery in the Mustian Center just before the ultrasound was administered, and the discovery was made that he had an 85% blockage in his right carotid artery, requiring surgery. Therefore, instead of one surgery, he had to have two surgeries within 1 1/2 days of each other. We shudder to think of the outcome of bypass surgery had this discovery not happened. Leann brought this to the attention of our cardiothoracic surgeon, his team, and the vascular surgeon. Thank God for nurses who go the second mile with a commendable work ethic. Leann's skills are noteworthy in terms of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence. We are blessed to have such healthcare staff, whether it be nurses or physicians and teams.
