I went into Baystate in the early morning hours, along with my husband to deliver our baby girl. It was such a joyous time for us both. Once I was transferred from the WETU for evaluation, I was brought up to my L&D room where I met Lee Ann Cook RN. She took her time asking me questions, evaluating me, and asking me all about my birth preferences. I informed Lee Ann that I was planning on having an unmedicated birth and also had a doula as part of my support team. Le Ann was so accommodating, patient, and supportive. She set up a warm shower, got me tools such as a birthing ball and peanut ball, and went as far as to talk to the providers in order to disconnect me from monitoring so I could move around the unit while I labored, and kept asking if there was something else that I needed. She kept her eye on me the whole time and kept the provider informed of what was going on. When it was time to push the team got ready, and I was excited to finally be able to meet our baby girl. The unexpected happened while pushing; a nurse informed the team of shoulder dystocia and began the protocol of a code white. As a registered nurse myself, I knew those two words too well. I was terrified to be at the other end. I then looked over and saw that my baby was not responding to stimulation and heard the team begin chest compressions on her. I lay on the bed hopelessly and prayed for the best outcome. Lee Ann sprang into action and assisted the physician with controlling my hemorrhage. They worked tirelessly and didn’t leave until I was stable; they went above and beyond the call of duty. Lee Ann is more than just a registered nurse. She is an Angel. She is compassionate about the work she does and does it with a purpose. You can really tell that she loves what she does by the way she cares for her patients. All of the nursing knowledge that she acquired over her 20 years as a nurse was evident through her skills. Lee Ann is an inspiration to all nurses such as me, she is the kind of nurse that we all strive to be - a loving, compassionate, and skillful nurse. I could only hope that all patients who come in for their delivery receive the exceptional care that Lee Ann provided. I will forever be thankful for Lee Ann and the care they provided me and my family. If I didn’t have a nurse as skillful as Lee Ann, who knows how different the outcome could have been.
