Lesley McIlroy has always been an exceptional leader and role model. Lesley has always made sure that everyone has what they need. You can always be assured that this nurse has your back. There was one instance recently that truly captures this great nurse's essence. As I have finally had a moment to collect my thoughts on today's events, I'd like to say this: I cannot tell you how much this nurse showed true leadership and compassion today.

We had a patient pass away and while he was a DNR, it was unexpected. Lesley was by my side from the first moment. Lesley facilitated immediately moving the patient to a private room knowing that his family would be coming and would want privacy. Lesley made sure the patient was presentable for his family. She called the time of death, having to actually say to his daughters, "Your father has passed away" while holding her own composure - because his physician was busy.

Lesley called for the chaplain to come right away, and sat and shared tears with his daughters. Lesley went through the deceased patient check list and prepared the patient for the morgue. Even though it was emotional, Lesley maintained her role as a teacher taking me step by step through everything.

I am so proud to work with my hospital family. It is really something when even in the midst of grieving the loss of a loved one, the family can stop, smile and thank us for the care that we gave their father, and tell us how much it means to them and that they will always love Winter Park Hospital for that.
