Leslie is an exceptional nurse. She works well with others and sets a positive example for the team. Leslie identified that two different beta-blockers, carvedilol and metoprolol, were ordered on the same patient and requested that pharmacy double-check the order. Pharmacy identified that both beta-blockers were new medications on the patient begun this admission There was not a clear reason identified for the duplicate beta-blocker orders to be started on a patient that was previously not on any antihypertensive therapy. The previous day's hospitalist started both orders at the same time. Likely this was a change of mind/oversight to order both. Leslie proceeded to follow-up with the hospitalist on service today and expressed her concern about the duplication in therapy. After her discussion with the hospitalist, the orders were corrected to single agent beta-blocker therapy. Leslie potentially avoided significant bradycardia and hypotension in her patient and her attention to detail is greatly appreciated. She undoubtedly adheres to the covenant pledge of excellence and is a great asset to our organization.
