We have bounced in and out of four different hospitals in the last 4 months with sudden kidney failure. Recently we discovered the root of the problem was ANKA vasculitis. They immediately began plasmapheresis and Rituxan infusions. His kidney function increased drastically. Unfortunately, as we were being discharged, he had a stroke, causing paralysis to his left side. The Encompass therapists have worked wonders! In two weeks’, time he has gone from walking none to 400 ft. When we got here, he had lost his muscle strength. He is 5’ 10” and only weighed 129 pounds. (Normal healthy weight 185) In the midst of all of this, we were given a ray of sunshine. Leslie saw past his present state and found a kindred mischievous spirit. He talked Leslie out of her Cracker Jacks. Leslie came frequently with lots of snacks between therapies to fatten him up. Leslie brought a smile and hope with her treats. Leslie was moved to a different floor, and we missed her. Yesterday, returning from therapy, we found a new package of Cracker Jacks waiting. We were sorry we had missed her but thought it was nice she had come back to check on him. If not the DAISY Award, Leslie deserves the Cracker Jack Award!
