In her 15-year tenure with UTSW, Leslie has participated in countless committees, cross-training initiatives, and educational events and never fails to share her knowledge with peers and new staff members. As a member of the float pool team, Leslie's clinical knowledge is vast extending into many areas such as MedSurg, progressive care, BMT, and women's services, to name a few. As an individual who often aids in onboarding newly hired staff, Leslie identified educational gaps in our RN competency checklists. With float pool being one of the largest departments, ensuring we have all the specific unit competencies can be a challenge. However, Leslie assisted in rectifying this concern by volunteering and collaborating with each inpatient unit to obtain their competency checklists and creating a master checklist for our team. This was a great undertaking and truly helped our department ensure staff were comfortable and had the resources they needed to care for such a variety of patients. Leslie is cross-trained in a variety of clinical and non-clinical areas throughout the organization such as rehab intake coordinator, bed control, staffing supervisor, and women's services. While Leslie frequently vocalizes her desire to learn and grow professionally, these opportunities arose after leaders in the respected areas observed her dedication, communication skills, and leadership abilities. The following PACT cards submitted for Leslie best exemplify the high standards of care and teamwork she effortlessly displays: "Leslie took care of me specifically, but her kindness, empathy, and educational strengths were extended to my family as well. I loved that every time she stepped in or out of the room we never felt rushed and she not only made sure we knew the five whys (who, what, when, where, and how) but she encouraged the family to provide their questions and feedback and took the time to truly utilize the teach-back method and ensure everyone understand the reasoning and that their questions were truly answered. So thankful! " This PACT highlights her strengths in compassion, accountability, attitude, and communication. "Leslie came in extra to aid in completing the critical shift log. I was the only staffing supervisor on this day when there are traditionally 2-3. Leslie began assisting me by aiding with phone calls and taking messages. She really helped save the day without ever being asked! She will never know how grateful I am for this help!" This PACT showcases her dedication to teamwork with the entire UTSW team. Leslie is a member of the inpatient skin and fall committee. She has also previously served as the chair of the nurse staffing effectiveness committee, in which she assisted in streamlining the use of 'float tool kits' and ‘float surveys’ which gave floated team members quick access to information regarding unit requirements and resources and an opportunity to share their experience of floating to a new unit, promoting staff satisfaction. Showcasing her commitment to education for patients and staff alike, Leslie is currently enrolled to complete a Master of Nursing Education with a long-term goal of giving back to the nursing community by teaching nursing students in a professional setting. Leslie is a gold PACT recipient for 2022 with nearly all submissions mentioning her positive demeanor and her dedication to patient advocacy. When speaking with Leslie's peers, her altruistic efforts can be summarized as honest and engaged. Longstanding peer, Senior Administrative Assistant Pamela Hewitt, described Leslie as "an irreplaceable asset to the department; someone who is willing to help anyone, regardless of their role. She is a pleasure to work with, a well-rounded woman, always with a smile on her face.” Leslie has volunteered to speak at local nursing schools to allow students to inquire about the profession and share her passion for the field as a part of the STARS program. She is a member of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses in which she obtained her national certification, CMSRN.
