Leslie sat at his bedside for over an hour and skipped taking any breaks that shift so that she could hold his hand and make this patient feel safe.
Our unit deals with a variety of patients, often they are sent to us due to acute injuries to the brain and spine or mental changes. Patients on our floor frequently act out aggressively and try to harm staff or themselves. One patient in particular was brought in for being considered a danger to self and others due to his aggressive outbursts and severe confusion. He was found wandering the streets in downtown Seattle. He came in restrained and remained restrained for the majority of his stay. Staff frequently requested not to have this patient due to the frequency of his violent outbursts and staff injury. Leslie always advocated to make this patient comfortable and feel safe by ordering snacks he enjoyed and encouraging the use of prn mood stabilizers. One night in particular, this patient was screaming and trying to tear off his violent restraints. He was contorting his body while thrashing in bed and attempting to bite staff. Leslie stepped in and immediately started helping the new grad who was assigned to the patient that night. She got ahold of the provider and was able to get medication to help with the patient's agitation. She waited with this patient until he was able to start to calm down. The patient remained very confused and restless, so Leslie turned on some music, collected some snacks, and sat with this patient. Within the hour this patient had a total change in behavior, he was singing and laughing and joyfully eating snacks. Leslie sat at his bedside for over an hour and skipped taking any breaks that shift so that she could hold his hand and make this patient feel safe. Thanks to Leslie, this patient was able to have a peaceful night and regain some sense of dignity.
