We are in the field of caring for and providing compassion to our patients, especially in times of need. This Unit had a fresh lung transplant patient who unexpectedly lost his daughter in a car accident. He was unable to leave the hospital due to his immunocompromised status and was unable to be with his family during the time he needed it most.
Our nurse Susan "Lexi" Thomas was caring for this patient when he learned of this news. Lexi provided emotional support to the patient during the shift and found out that he really didn't want to be alone when the funeral would be taking place. Lexi proceeded to learn about his cultural practices and religious beliefs in regard to the funeral process. She asked permission from the patient to set up his room while he streamed the funeral on his computer. He sent Lexi a photo of his daughter which she printed out and placed in a frame, bought yellow and white decorations, flowers and battery-powered candles.
Lexi came in on her day off and sat with him during the entire process that lasted for about 5 hours. Our staff working on that day also rotated through the room to be with the patient during this time as well. Many tears were shared, and kindness shown to this patient when he was going through such a hard time. This patient and his family were and have been so appreciative of the kind gesture that they often refer to us like family and come by to visit when they are in town or have appointments.
