I was walking by Lia's patient's room and noticed that she was rubbing her patient's hand. I asked her if I can help her with anything and she stated she did not need help she was just exfoliating and moisturizing her patient's hand because his wife was coming in to see the patient and Lia wanted it to not be rough and peeling when the wife held his hand. That patient that day was very sick on continuous dialysis, intubated, sedated, on vasopressor, and not doing well. Lia, however, made time to ensure that the potential last time the wife may visit her husband was as meaningful as possible and the wife can hold the hand of her husband as she remembers him not as a sick patient. This really touched my heart when she told me that I can't imagine the impact it had on both the patient and the wife.
