Liam helped calm an agitated/anxious patient tonight. The patient arrived high on drugs, believing she was going to die, her restless movements frequently taking her out of her room, and causing her to remove her clothes. Liam was able to calm her, he reassured her, used humor and distraction to manage her behaviors. The patient was deemed unsafe for our acute rooms and moved to Psych. Liam was able to help the patient ambulate calmly down the hallway into her new room, where he spent the next several hours sitting on the floor next to the patient's mattress, talking with her, and helping her manage her anxiety and agitation. Liam also helped give her IM medications, which we were expecting would be a struggle, but after his calm explanations, she allowed without resistance. Not many nurses or people have the patience, empathy, and genuine kindness to sit in a psychotic person's room, literally on their level, and help them through a crisis. Liam is one such person.
