July 2019 Honoree
libby showalter, BSN, RN
It is my layman's guess that nominations for this award will be for nurses in the more dramatic areas of health care and that is understandable. My recommendation of Libby comes from a few years of watching her care for patients coming into a less traumatic setting, a primary care office, in varying health conditions. What I have observed is a nurse who immediately makes the patient feel relaxed and welcome. She puts the patient at ease and goes about her work professionally and efficiently. She reflects fine professional skills and knowledge. In her role of nurse over an extended period of time rather than nurses who are in a short term relationship during a crisis, Libby seems to establish a friend's interest in her patients' well being. She does not pretend sympathy (I feel like you feel or I know how you feel), but she totally exudes empathy (I can imagine how you must be feeling) which is much better.
Libby is an outstanding asset to your organization in building long term confidence in your patient base.
