My husband and I would like to nominate our labor and delivery nurse, Liev, for a DAISY Award for their thoroughness, professionalism, and dedication to their patients. After 4 nights on the labor and delivery ward to monitor umbilical cord flow issues, Liev came on shift and immediately recognized that an emergency situation was developing. Their attention to detail as I developed HELLP syndrome likely saved my life as well as my son’s. When my blood pressure began to rise, they did not disregard it as a misreading or positional issue. They remeasured and immediately alerted the doctor on call, who ordered additional lab work. When the tech struggled to get a good blood sample, and my results came back elevated, they treated it as elevated while requesting an urgent redraw. Throughout this process, as things moved rapidly with many people in and out of my room, Liev communicated everything that was happening, the reasons behind each action, and the potential plan in case my situation developed into an emergency (which it did). Having this level of information was comforting for me, a person prone to anxiety and stressing over “the unknown.” Liev’s language was both reassuring and compassionate, and provided a sense of security and trust in them as my care provider. This clear communication continued as I was prepped for an emergency C-section, wheeled to the OR, and in post-op recovery. I delivered my son at 28 weeks and 6 days gestation, weighing only 1 lb 12 oz. As I sit in the NICU, 7 weeks later, holding my son and reflecting on the entire experience, I truly think that our outcome could have been very different had we had a nurse who was not as attentive, knowledgeable, thorough, compassionate, or communicative. For these reasons, we believe Liev embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award and is an ideal candidate for this honor. Thank you!
