Lila went one step further. The next shift that Lila was on, she requested to take care of the patient so she could have continuity of care.
I would like to nominate Lila Norway for a DAISY Award. Lila has a true passion for her patients. We had a patient give birth to a 23.6-week gestational age baby on our unit that unfortunately did not live very long. Lila was assigned to the patient the morning after her baby had passed. Understandably the patient was having a hard time, hearing other babies on the unit. We transferred the patient to another area of the unit where it was quieter and she would be able to rest. This is where Lila’s compassion was demonstrated in words I cannot describe. Lila could have transferred this patient to another nurse that was working on that floor, but no, Lila had made a great connection with the patient and wanted to keep her on as her patient. That meant Lila had her assignment and patients on two floors.  It could have been so easy for Lila to hand the patient off of her assignment, but she did not. It is always hard to know what to say to our parents that have a loss. Lila went one step further. The next shift that Lila was on, she requested to take care of the patient so she could have continuity of care. Lila was on duty the day that the patient was discharged. She went down to the gift shop and bought a card and wrote some encouraging words. This is truly an amazing nurse. A week or so later Lila was discharging a patient and the patient was in the lobby coming in for a follow-up visit and Lila saw her was able to give her a hug and continue to show the patient support. I feel Lila showed what kind of nurse represents the qualities in the DAISY Award.
