It felt like I was talking to a peer, and we were finding solutions collaboratively.
I unexpectedly underwent back surgery after initially visiting the ER for a minor symptom. However, my recovery took a turn when I developed a headache and returned to the hospital a week later and was diagnosed with a CSF leak. Facing intense pain, these hospital stays and surgeries were an entirely new experience for me. Despite my usual independence and resilience, I found myself grappling with feelings of powerlessness, especially as I spent most days alone in the hospital, far from my family in Washington State.

Meeting Lila (who shares my favorite niece's name) was a gift. Having someone of the same demographic brought me more comfort than I anticipated. Her relatability as someone my age, gender, and education made our interactions particularly impactful. It felt like I was talking to a peer, and we were finding solutions collaboratively. She was also generous enough to share her own experiences with migraines, which gave me hope that my situation was temporary and solvable.

I'm deeply thankful for Lila and the rest of the nursing staff at NYU Langone. Their patience, empathy, and ability to provide exceptional care during the lowest points didn’t go unnoticed. It’s their care that helped me keep moving through and healing.
