She gave dignity, confidence, and joy to someone in a vulnerable moment.
Lily truly went above and beyond for one of our long-term patients. This patient, who wore a large head wrap connected to a machine, confided that he was nervous about FaceTiming his young family member. He was worried the head wrap might look scary and didn’t want to frighten the child. Lily didn’t brush it off. Instead, during a bit of downtime, she got crafty. She made fun, oversized animal headbands out of cardstock—something lighthearted the patient could wear to cover his head wrap. It was such a thoughtful gesture, one that came completely from the heart. When she brought in the first headband, the patient couldn’t stop laughing, and neither could Lily. It was the kind of laughter that’s contagious, the kind that spreads across the unit and lifts everyone’s spirits. In an ICU, where the mood can often feel heavy, that moment of joy was something special. What Lily gave that day went beyond medical care. She gave dignity, confidence, and joy to someone in a vulnerable moment. This is what true nursing looks like: compassion in action, care that can’t be charted, and moments that change lives in the smallest but most meaningful ways. We are so lucky to work alongside someone like Lily. She didn’t just brighten her patient’s day, she reminded all of us why we do what we do.
