Patient "B" was a young, substance-abuse patient admitted to 14W for excessive skin damage as a result of self-injection. As a typical drug-abuse patient, Patient "B" was rude and unappreciative of staff on the unit. Multiple times she attempted to leave AMA when her pain medications were tapered down. She made it clear to the health care team that her main goal was to get the "meds she wanted".

Nurses prevented Patient "B" from leaving AMA on a few occasions, as they wanted to ensure she got the care she needed - as going back to "the streets" could cause Patient "B" to die, if proper care was not given to the deep wounds on her legs.

Patient "B" kept a journal, where she let her emotions pour out on paper. It was helping her get through tough times. When Lin found out about the passion for journaling - she came up with a great idea of giving a patient a "diary of positive thoughts and wishes" from the staff on the unit. This Diary was dedicated to Patient "B" - to show her that the nurses cared for her, and they really wanted to wish her all the best for her recovery.

Substance abuse is a challenging disease, and not having anyone to offer support makes it even harder. Many nurses on the unit offered well wishes, and inspirational comments - so that when Patient "B" felt lonely and depressed - she could reach out for the diary and remind herself how many of us on 14West care for her, and her well being.

Patient "B" was touched to tears when she received the diary upon discharge. It was very emotional to watch her turn from a negative and rude person - to a vulnerable human being who was seeking attention, care and compassion.
